Students "Dunk" Harry Reid and Bart Stupak
Members of the International Conservatives and Young Americans for Liberty wanted to enlighten the Western Michigan University community about their side of the healthcare debate in a way that would be both interesting and effective.
The groups combined efforts to set up a dunk tank in the middle of campus. Members dressed up as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Congressman Bart Stupak while students passing by got a chance to "dunk" the politicians and their lousy views on healthcare. (Unable to come up with a suitable costume for Harry Reid, one member wore a tie and a Darth Vader mask, which was easily the crowd favorite.)
While students dunked the politicians, members of the groups handed out literature on their take of the health care debate and information about their groups.
“It was a great event,” said International Conservatives president Chris McCann. “Everyone seemed to really enjoy it and those who weren’t sure where they stood on the healthcare debate asked some really great questions. I definitely recommend it to other student groups because it was easy to coordinate and a great way to get some press.”
The students were interviewed by the local CBS news and a photo from the event was featured as the Western Herald’s photo of the week.
